Northern Dare County Vibracores

AVS project objectives were to establish geotechnical characteristics of borrow sources offshore northern Dare County for beach nourishment operations for the towns of Duck, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina. Vibracore sampling was performed in three areas (Area S1-4, A and B) in the Atlantic Ocean, two of which were located in federal waters requiring that BOEM permit conditions be met. The survey areas were approximately 55 to 75 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and 8 to 28 miles from Oregon Inlet. Based on historical bathymetry from the National Ocean Service and recent reconnaissance investigations conducted by the client, vibracore sampling was anticipated to be conducted in water depths ranging from 40 feet to 70 feet.

Scope of Work:

  • Mobilized our research vessel, M/V Thunderforce, vibracore equipment and crew for vibracore sampling operations offshore
  • Utilized our large pneumatic coring machine and a penetrometer for measurement of coring advance rates and penetration depths
  • Collected 100 vibracore samples at client designated locations
  • Split and turned over all collected cores
  • Provided our vessel and support to perform geophysical surveying requirements
  • Submitted the final report per project specifications
