AVS Role: Vibracore Services, Laboratory Analysis and Reporting

Project objectives were to establish geotechnical characteristics from a potential offshore borrow area near Rodanthe in Dare County, North Carolina, with the intent to restore barrier island beaches.

Scope of Work:

  • Mobilized our research vessel, M/V Thunderforce, vibracore equipment and crew to project area
  • Performed 100 vibracores to depths of 20 feet below sea bottom in two borrow areas offshore south of Oregon Inlet
  • As needed, split cores on deck to assist in optimizing vibracore placement
  • Demobilized vessel and vibracore equipment
  • All coring performed in “live boat” mode
  • Performed all laboratory analysis to the USACE specifications  
  • Laboratory analysis included photo-documentation, core logging by a professional geologist, sieve analysis, Munsell color designation, carbonate content and heavy mineral analysis  
  • Submitted the detailed final report to the client
